Dr. Juan Carlos Mérida
Dental Surgeon
I was born and raised in Tampíco, Tamaulipas, México. My father was a dental teacher at the university in Tamaulipas and at age 12 I started helping him in the lab. My mother is a Psychologist and wanted me to become a psychologist, but I loved creating things and working with my hands, so I decided to become a dentist instead.
I graduated from the Universidad Autόnoma de Tamaulipas UAT in 1985, after graduation I did my one year of social service and then worked for another dentist in Tampico for several years. Before coming to Nuevo Progreso I was a teacher at the University for 1 year, but I didn’t really like being a teacher. My plan when I came to Nuevo Progreso in 1989 was to work for a few months and then go to Los Angeles but circumstances changed, and I ended up staying. At that time there was around 15 dentists in Nuevo Progreso but every year more and more dentists came.
Living in Nuevo Progreso, there isn’t much to do here and it was very difficult to travel to other towns in the area, so I and a few of the other dentists here in Nuevo Progreso, started a club to get together and discuss dental topics, as a group we went to dental conferences and brought conferences to Nuevo Progreso. We brought a speaker from the University of San Antonio who was originally from Brazil. Through these conferences I became an Affiliated Member of the American Dental Association. Our group eventually became what is now the Colégio de Cirujanos Dentistas de Nuevo Progreso, which is also part of the Mexican Dental Association and Colégio de Tamaulipas. My first office was on the other side of town in a plaza for many years and then I opened another office here in this current location and eventually closed the other office. I have been in this office for over 10 years.
There was a young lady, she was 18, that came in and her teeth were a little crooked and she felt she was ugly, she was actually good looking, but she was insecure because of her teeth. She admitted she never had a boyfriend. With Orthodontics, in about 6 months her smile started changing, and I noticed that she would come more dressed up and had changed her hair style. After 9 months she came in with a young man, I asked if it was her brother, she told me “it was her boyfriend and it was all thanks to you”. After 3 years, when her treatments were finished, she was engaged to be married. I didn’t feel I did much, but it changed the way she felt about herself and why I wanted to focus my practice in that area but, my patients require specialties in all areas of dentistry. I completed this specialty course in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, in 2002 I was certified in Germany. While in Germany, I attended the European Congress for Maxillary Orthopedics and Orthodontists.

Dentistry is a broad medical specialty that deals with the teeth, gum, nerves, and jaw, while Orthodontics is a specialty within dentistry for treatment of disorders in tooth development, working around three areas, the diagnosis, the prevention and treatment to correct the position of the teeth and jaw.
Metal braces are the fastest and most effective treatment option and are the most used due to their versatility and are cost effective, although not the most aesthetic. The invisible or transparent are removable that allows you to take them off, to eat and brush your teeth. These are tailored to each patient and are practically undetectable since they have the exact shape of your teeth and the material with which they are made is transparent. They are perfect for those who, for work or aesthetic reasons, do not want to use metal braces.
Orthopedics, A branch of medicine to diagnose, guide and correct the lack of balance between teeth, jaws and the facial structure, allows me to design treatment plans that integrate other specialties. I completed this specialty course in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, in 2002 I was certified in Germany. While in Germany, I attended the European Congress for Maxillary Orthopedics and Orthodontists.
