“Leading you to an Optimal Oral Health”

Dra. Maribel Martinez

Dental Surgeon

I was born and raised in Nuevo Progreso and because my parents worked in agriculture in the United States, I attended elementary, junior high and part of high school in Edinburg Texas. When I was 11, I got my first job at El Disco, working as a sales person and after 3 months I got a job working in a cafeteria called Mucho Bueno that was located near the center of town and this is where I met all the dentists in town. Shortly before my 12th birthday, was when I decided I wanted to become a dentist. Everyone wanted me to work with them because I spoke English fluently, everyone except the dentist I really wanted to work with. Dr Jesus Aguirre was the most prominent dentist, but he thought I was too young at that time. Dr Bonifacio Hernandez gave me a job cleaning and I would also babysit their new baby, who grew up to be a dentist. When I was 13, Dr Bonifacio helped get me a job in Dr Aguirre’s office to do the cleaning. There were 10 dentists working there and they would call me in to translate for them. One patient told Dr Aguirre that I should not be cleaning but doing the translating.  It was while I was translating, I got to watch each doctor while they worked and learn about the tools and materials used for the procedures. Dr Aguirre was very intimidating, and the dental assistants would be nervous working with him, that was when I started getting more involved by helping the assistants out. The doctor noticed I liked dental work and realized my desire to become a dentist. I worked with Dr Aguirre for almost 7 years until I graduated high school. When I left there and started working with another dentist in his clinic, I was ready to go to college.  I was planning on going to the university in Reynosa but he said “if I was going to go I needed to do it right,” so he helped me get into the university in Monterrey and I graduated from Universidad Autonomous de Nuevo Leon in 2003.

I had been working with another doctor for three years when I was asked, by a mutual friend of Dr Cruz of Cross Dental Arts, to help out for two weeks while he was on leave getting married. When he came back, I continued to work with him for another 2 years. In 2008 he decided to move to be closer to his family and he asked me to take over the clinic.

I am a certified member of Colégio de Cirujanos Dentistas de Nuevo Progreso, I have been certified by the Mexican Dental Association since 2007 and an affiliated member of the American Dental Association.  I am very involved in my community, I have been working with the Winter Texan organization a long time and have been on the committee for the Winter Texan King & Queen. I am involved in community events and activities and was instrumental in restarting the Rotary Club again here for Nuevo Progreso in May and I was honored to be sworn in as President in August.

The thing I am most proud of is that I am one of the few dentists that is certified here in Nuevo Progreso and feel that it should give my patients confidence that I am qualified, and that I speak English very well, helps too.

We are conveniently located close to the border, we have an upstairs clinic, but if we have patients that have trouble with stairs, we have an office downstairs to accommodate for that. We have our own lab for porcelains and acrylics. We can offer services that require more then one visit from one day to another at no additional charge. We do all general dentistry and can evaluate for more specialized treatments and recommend qualified professionals for those treatments. We work with many experienced, specialized dentists. I check my patients first, so you can be assured you are only getting what is necessary dental work and no unnecessary expense.

I feel very proud of who I am, I honor my profession, my beliefs, my ideals, I love who I am, and I really appreciate what I have. My unconditional love for God, my children and what gives me the most satisfaction... Being a DENTIST!
