I was born in Puebla, Mexico and raised in Mexico City, attending high school in Denver, Colorado, allowed me to become bilingual, facilitating better communication with my patients. Switching between languages automatically without any thought, helps me understand their needs and expectations. After high school, I returned to Mexico City where I completed my degree in Dentistry at The Universidad Latino Americana (ULA) which is incorporated to the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), one of the most highly regarded world class Universities. My thesis was a whole book on dental blade

implants, which were clinically used before screw implants and bone grafting were invented and incorporated into dentistry. Blade implants required a very difficult technique to insert and did not allow sufficient time for the bone to heal, not allowing proper osseointegration. Not every dentist knew how to perform this specific technique.

After marrying, I continued my father’s practice in Mexico City with my wife’s help. My father, may he rest in peace, was one of the first Implantologists in Mexico City and Puebla. I learned a tremendous amount in all areas of dentistry from him. In 1988, I had the opportunity to study under an implantology pioneer, Dr. Gerald A. Niznick. Dr. Niznick invented the Screw-Vent internal hex implant in 1986, which is still the backbone of Zimmer’s dental implant system.

Over the next twenty years, during which my wife and I had six children, I continued to broaden my dental education in the United States, taking courses to continually update my knowledge on the latest dental technology and procedures; such as Bone Grafts and Sinus Lifts with Dr. Dennis Smiler (1996); as well as Cosmetic Dentistry, Endodontics (Root Canals), Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics and Occlusion (Fix partials or dental bridges and dentures); implant and no-implant supported; as well as Periodontics (Gums) using the latest technology of Dental Lasers.

Ten years ago, we moved to Los Algodones, Mexico looking for a quieter place. At the beginning of the dental boom of Los Algodones, I was one of the few dentists practicing dental implants. New implant design together with updated protocols have allowed better fusion of the bone to the implants, allowing for a better osseointegration process to take place. In situations where there is a minimum amount of bone, we can also perform bone grafting, allowing a more secure placement of the implants. Dental implants today are made of titanium, one of the only materials that bone integrates with,

also used for hip and knee replacements.  Typically, dental implants will last for many years, providing long lasting results. We have numerous patients returning after many years, still issue free. In my office, we perform all dental procedures; from a simple cleaning to a very complicated full mouth restoration. Having the lab just a couple of blocks away from my office, is a huge advantage; if an issue with crowns or bridgework occurs, it can be immediately rectified or replaced, optimizing quality control.

My office policy is: “There is no one treatment that fits every patient”. Each patient is thoroughly evaluated and treated in accordance to his/her dental needs. On occasion, when a patient will come to my office with few teeth or no teeth at all or with a small amount of bone, we start by saving as many teeth as possible. Then, if needed, we perform bone grafting treatment, as a foundation for implant placement. Three to six months later, after the bone graft has properly healed, the dental implants are installed. After allowing sufficient time to for the implants to heal, another three to six months to allow osseointegration, we can proceed to the next stage, the final restoration; either implant supported crowns or implant supported dentures. However, if the patient has sufficient bone to begin with, we can proceed directly to implant placement and the final restorations, thus saving time. Although most cases require a three to six month treatment time, a complicated case can take nine months to a year and a half to complete.

Practicing dentistry in Mexico provides the advantage of keeping all treatments under one roof, within the same office. In the U.S., a patient typically goes for a cleaning to a general dentist however, if they need more sophisticated treatments, a root canal specialist or periodontist will be required. In my office in Los Algodones, I program and supervise all treatments from beginning to end; I know exactly what is happening with my patients. Therefore, if something is not going as planned, adjustments can be made accordingly. Maximizing each

patient’s trip as much as possible and understanding patients only have so much time to accomplish so much work, my staff and I work with a patient an entire day, if need be. We spend as much time as necessary with each patient, working past closing time if necessary. Providing patients with the best treatment possible, we treat our patients like close family, accommodating their every need, making their dental experience as painless as possible. Our goal is for our patients to leave our office happy, satisfied and smiling.

In Spanish, there is a saying: “La boca es la puerta a la buena salud” - “The mouth is the door to good health”. If a person is unable to chew their food properly, then they cannot digest it properly, leading to many health problems. People come into my office dentally crippled; they cannot eat properly, are in a bad mood, don’t enjoy spending time with family and friends, don’t go out to restaurants or parties, and are ashamed of their appearance, either covering their mouth or do not smile at all. After treatment, having their teeth fixed, our patients leave the office smiling again with renewed self-confidence. Building self-esteem, self-confidence and self-assurance is a big life changer! In a real case example, an elderly man came into my office walking with a cane. He complained that he could barely eat, was very weak and was constantly in a bad mood due to poorly fitting dentures. The patient chose to treat his case with permanent full mouth rehabilitation with dental implants and fixed crowns. A year later, the gentleman returned walking without the cane! He looked healthy, strong and told me how his life has improved, being able to mingle amongst people and enjoying time with his family and grandson. Another incident, I saved several of the patient’s teeth and rehabilitated the patient’s mouth with implants and fixed implant supported crowns. The patient was so enthusiastic with his new smile that he was raving about his work to his family and friends. Experiencing such results inspires my staff and I to continue helping our patients with their dental needs; providing a healthy mouth with bright, beautiful and awesome smiles
